A National Historic Landmark Unlike Any Other
In 2014, the Maitland Art Center was designated a National Historic Landmark, an honor reserved for places of exceptional significance in interpreting the heritage of the United States. Of the more than 80,000 historic places listed on the National Register, fewer than 3% carry this status. The Maitland Art Center is one of only 45 NHLs in Florida, and the only one in the region recognized for its contribution to the development of modern American art and architecture.
The designation honors not just the history of the site, but its extraordinary architecture, a rare and nationally significant example of Mayan Revival design in the Southeastern United States. Created by visionary artist and architect Jules André Smith, the campus is an immersive, hand-built environment where art and architecture are inseparable. Smith sculpted over 2,500 concrete reliefs directly into the buildings and walkways, drawing on a wildly inventive blend of influences: Mesoamerican imagery, Christian symbolism, Buddhist motifs, and elements of surrealism and fantasy.
More than a gallery or studio complex, the site was conceived as an art laboratory, acting as a fully integrated creative retreat where artists could live, work, and explore bold new ideas. The result is a campus unlike any other: part sculpture garden, part temple, and part theatrical set. Smith’s background in set design and fine art enabled him to manipulate light, texture, and space in ways that still feel visionary and experimental today.
The National Historic Landmark designation affirms the site’s national importance and allows the Art & History Museums of Maitland to access specialized preservation resources, consult with national conservation experts, and apply for prestigious restoration grants. This support is essential to the ongoing care of Smith’s delicate concrete carvings, aging materials, and historic finishes.
But designation alone is not enough. Preserving this cultural treasure requires community support. Your contributions help us maintain the campus as a living, evolving space, honoring the legacy of Smith while inspiring the next generation of artists.
